Black Rose ~ Nora Roberts

I finished this book last week, but just have not found the time to post about it, so today is catch up day.

This is the second book in the In The Garden series, it is well written, and although there are very few surprises, it is an enjoyable read, the characters are likable. This book was about Roz and Mitch, the Dr. doing research on the family ghost, the Harper Bride. The Harper Bride takes less of a backseat roll in this book than the first and though you don’t find out anything more about her (really) than you did in the first, but you do get to see a bit of expected “haunting” to make the book fun.

The first book in the In The Garden trilogy. A VERY good read. This was the first Nora Roberts I have ever read, I was missing out. Other than some editing issues (mis spellings and forgetting n’t or in a couple places, nothing major) this was a great read, hard to put down at the end. You get great charecters, a wonderful setting, and a ghost, what more could you ask for? The story is about Stella who loses her husband and heads back to her birthplace in TN to live near her father and step mother. She lands a dream job at a nursery (In The Garden), where she meets the brooding and handsome Logan.

Off to paperback book swap to order the second book, might check my library in the meantime, not sure I want to wait!

Loves Enduring Promise~Janette Oke

This is book 2 in the Love Comes Softly Series. Oh, where to begin?

Whereas I really enjoyed the first book and could not wait to start the second, I had no such feeling with this one. I was hard-pressed to find an actual point to this book. I came to the realization when I hit the last few chapters of the book that the only point to this book is to move us from the characters of Marty and Clark to Missie (the child of Marty and Clark) and her new husband.

Thats right, this book spans 13 years, the end of the last book she was 2, by the end of this one, she is 18, that is a LOT of ground to cover in 150 pages. Just when you think you might be getting to an actual “story” the author cuts you off and moves ahead another 6 months to a year. I ended the last book excited to know more about Marty and Clark, but you really don’t get to know them any better in this book, characters just flit in and out of the story like so much dust on the wind.

Honestly, she could have forgone this book completely and just wrote a good prologue on the next book, this one bored me so much, I don’t think I will continue this series. Completely disappointing.

Love Comes Softly~Janette Oke

So I recently re-embarked on my reading journey. I used to read a lot, whenever I had a free minute, you could find me with a book, lunch breaks at work, bedtime, anytime. Part of my issue was just not finding time to do it.

My husband got me the video Love Comes Softly, based (albeit loosely I found) on the book. I wish Hallmark had not felt the need to embellish the original story, as it stands on it’s own.

The book is the first in a series of books. It begins with Marty and her husband Clem coming west by wagon train. In a terrible unforeseen accident Marty becomes a widow. At the funeral of her husband she meets Clark Davis, a widower with a small child. He offers her a place to stay if she consents to become his wife of convenience, all she must do is be a mom to his young girl. As the title of the book gives away love blooms between the two of them. It was a good short read and I am glad I have the second one to be starting here when I have a minute.
